Are you wondering how much insulation you need to insulate an area of your home? We’ve got you covered. 

You need two key things: your floor area and your joist spacing. From there, you can work out how much insulation you need and what the job is likely to cost. 

The quick answer:
To work out your underfloor insulation order, you need to:

  1. Measure the floor area you want to insulate
  2. Measure the spacing between your joists
  3. Choose the right insulation width
  4. Work out how many packs you need
  5. Allow for staples, tools and delivery

Easy-to-Measure Guide: How to Measure Your Home’s Floor Area

Measure your floor area: 

Measure the length and width of each area you want to insulate.
Length × width = square metres
If the home is not one neat rectangle, break it into smaller rectangles, calculate each section, then add them together.

  • Consider your home from a bird’s eye view and divide it into manageable shapes. (If your home is a square or rectangle, you can calculate the entire area in one sum.)
  • Measure the area of each shape by multiplying their length by their width, this will give you the square meterage (m²) for each section.
  • Add each shape’s area together to find the total area of your home.

Please do NOT measure in lineal metres. 
Insulation is not sold in lineal metres. 

Next, measure your joist spacing:  

Joist spacing is the gap between the timber joists under your floor.  

You need this measurement because underfloor insulation needs to fit snugly between the joists. 

How to measure joists for insulation cost and installation

But First! What is a Joist?

A joist is simply the timber that runs directly underneath your floorboards.  

The measurement you need is the distance between one joist and another.  In this case – it is 430mm wide THEN ADD 20mm to the joist width.    

Why should I add 20mm??  
It is so much better to have your insulation a little wider than the space to allow to ease of installation.  An explanation of the installation process can be found here   

Examples: 

For a joist spacing of 430mm you would want to order 450mm wide insulation (this is the general joist spacing in Victoria).

For a joist spacing of 410mm, you would want to order 430mm wide insulation (this is generally the joist spacing in NSW, ACT, SA and QLD). 

But there are exceptions to this, so please pop under the floor and measure the distance.  

What if My Joists Spacings are Different? 

If your joists are different to these, you can either – trim your insulation,  or go to the Turn and Tear method – which is how professional installers cater for variable width joists

What is a Joist “Centre”

Builders generally talk about joist centres – which is just the centre of one joist to the centre of another.  Conveniently, this is exactly the width of insulation you should order for a perfect fit.  

So now you should have the width of insulation that you need for your home.

Example 1:

  • You need to insulate 150 square metres 
  • You are based in Melbourne and have a suitable vehicle to collect your order from our warehouse. 
  • You have decided to use Value Poly R2.5 450mm wide  
  • The ready reckoner has told you that you need 17 packs 
  • So at $90 per pack x 17 packs = $1,530
  • Delivery is free as you are collecting from our Warehouse.

Example 2:

  • You need to insulate 150 square metres 
  • You are based in Sydney and would prefer to have your insulation delivered to your door.  
  • You have decided to use PolyMax R2.5 430mm wide  
  • The ready reckoner has told you that you need 17 packs 
  • So $163 per pack x 17 packs = $2,771 
  • Delivery is $195, so total price is $2,966.

Add the extras you may need: 

When pricing your job, remember that insulation is not the only thing you may need. You will also need staples, a suitable stapler (do not use a hand held stapler – due to the risk of stapling a wire – electrical shock is real), lighting, tarps or tool hire. 

The final cost will depend on:

  • total floor area
  • product selected
  • insulation width
  • pack or roll coverage
  • staples and tools
  • delivery of the product to your home, or your time in collecting it from a depot
  • whether you DIY or need help
  • whether the subfloor is difficult or slow to work in 

At this stage, you might be wonder whether underfloor insulation is worth it? The answer depends on your home, climate, current heating and cooling use, product choice and whether you DIY or pay for installation.
