Underfloor Insulation Sydney & NSW

DIY polyester underfloor insulation for Sydney homes

If your Sydney home has suspended timber floors, underfloor insulation can make a very real difference to how your home feels. Cold floorboards, draughty rooms, hard-to-heat living areas and that unpleasant “why is the floor freezing?” feeling are all common signs that heat is escaping through the floor. Underfloor insulation helps slow that heat loss, making your home feel warmer in winter, more comfortable year-round and easier to heat efficiently.

And the good news? If you have suitable access under your home, underfloor insulation can be a very achievable DIY project.
For Sydney and NSW customers, we supply Polymax R2.5 polyester underfloor insulation. It is safe to handle, non-itchy, durable and designed to fit snugly between timber floor joists.

Why underfloor insulation matters

A suspended timber floor has an open subfloor underneath it. That means cold air can sit under the house and your floorboards can become a major source of heat loss. Even if you have rugs or carpet, the floor itself may still be poorly insulated. Carpet can make a floor feel warmer underfoot, but it does not do the same job as properly installed underfloor insulation.

Underfloor insulation works by sitting directly beneath the floorboards, between the joists, helping to slow the movement of heat through the floor. When installed correctly, it can help:

  • make rooms feel warmer in winter
  • reduce draughts coming up through timber floors
  • improve comfort underfoot
  • help your heating work more effectively
  • reduce wasted energy
  • soften some noise transfer from below

It is not glamorous. It lives under the house, minding its own business. But when it is missing, you can often feel it.

Is my Sydney home suitable for underfloor insulation?

Underfloor insulation is suitable for homes with suspended timber floors and safe access underneath.  It is not suitable for concrete slabs, because there is no accessible subfloor cavity to insulate from below.
Before ordering, you need to check that your subfloor is safe and practical to work in. Your home may be suitable if:

  • you have timber floorboards with joists underneath
  • there is enough crawl space to move and work safely
  • the subfloor is reasonably dry
  • the timbers are sound
  • there is no loose asbestos, dangerous wiring or sharp debris
  • there is no active pest infestation
  • plumbing, wiring or restumping work has already been completed

If your subfloor has pooling water, rotten timbers, mould, asbestos risk, exposed electrical hazards or serious pest activity, sort those issues first. Insulation should be one of the last things installed under the floor, not the thing that hides problems you already needed to fix.

Which underfloor insulation is available in NSW?

For Sydney and NSW customers, we supply Polymax R2.5 polyester underfloor insulation.
Polymax is a premium polyester insulation product and is the underfloor insulation option available for NSW. Value Poly is not currently supplied in NSW.

Polymax is available in two widths:

430mm wide Polymax

Best suited to narrower joist spacing of 410mm wide

450mm wide Polymax

Best suited to standard joist spacing of 430mm where the width allows the insulation to fit firmly between the joists.

The right width depends on your joist spacing. Do not guess this bit. Measure your joists before orderinand calculate how much insulation you will need so the insulation fits properly and can be stapled securely into place.

Why polyester underfloor insulation?

We recommend polyester underfloor insulation because it is practical for real homes and real DIYers.

Polyester insulation is:

  • non-itchy
  • low-irritant
  • safe and easy to handle
  • durable
  • moisture resistant
  • easy to cut or tear to size
  • removable for future access
  • suitable for stapling to timber joists

That last point really matters.  Underfloor insulation only works properly when it stays in the right place. It needs to sit snugly against the underside of the floorboards without sagging, slumping or leaving gaps.  Polyester is strong enough to be stapled to timber joists, which helps hold it firmly in position over time. This also makes it easier to pull back and re-staple later if a plumber, electrician or termite inspector needs access.

How underfloor insulation should be installed

The goal is simple: the insulation needs to sit firmly against the underside of the floor, between the joists, without gaps.  For timber joists, polyester underfloor insulation is usually installed by stapling it to the lower edge of the joists. This holds the insulation in place and helps stop it sagging over time.

A good installation should:

  • keep the insulation in direct contact with the floorboards
  • avoid gaps between the insulation and the floor
  • avoid bunching or over-compressing the insulation
  • use enough staples to hold the insulation securely
  • use galvanised staples for durability
  • keep the insulation neat around pipes, wires and obstructions
  • use the turn-and-tear method where joist spacing is uneven

Please do not rely on a few bits of packing strap and good vibes. Underfloor insulation lives under your house, where gravity, moisture, airflow, pests and time all get a say. It needs to be properly secured.

Can I install underfloor insulation myself?

Many Sydney homeowners can install underfloor insulation themselves if the subfloor is safe, dry and accessible.
You do need to be comfortable working under the house. It is awkward, physical work. You will be crawling, measuring, stapling, cutting and negotiating with spiders who were not consulted about your renovation plans.

You will need:

  • Polymax underfloor insulation
  • an electric or cordless stapler
  • galvanised staples
  • a headlamp or work light
  • gloves
  • goggles
  • old clothes
  • tarps to keep the insulation clean
  • an installation buddy if possible

If your subfloor access is very low, damp, unsafe or full of obstructions, DIY may not be the best option. In that case, contact us and we may be able to refer you to an installer in your area.

If you are not sure, call us before ordering.

Sydney delivery and NSW collection options

Sydney and NSW customers have several options for receiving Polymax underfloor insulation.  For Sydney metro customers, we can arrange delivery direct to your home.
You may also be able to collect your confirmed order from Ingleburn. Collection days and times can vary, so please check with us before making plans.
NSW also has an extensive depot network, which means confirmed orders can often be collected from regional depot locations at no additional collection cost.

NSW depot locations include:

Please make sure you have a suitable vehicle before collecting. Insulation packs are bulky – this is not a “just pop it in the boot next to the groceries” situation.  If the depot staff deem that your vehicle is not safe to carry your insulation, they will not allow you to load your vehicle.

Before you order

Before ordering underfloor insulation for your Sydney or NSW home, check three things:

  1. First, confirm that your home has suspended timber floors and safe subfloor access.
  2. Second, measure your floor area so you know how much insulation you need.
  3. Third, measure your joist spacing so you choose the right width of Polymax.

Once you have those details, you can order online or call the ecoMaster team on 1300 326 627 for help.
